Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. It sounds simple, but this represents 50 percent of the energy requirements in electric vehicles. It places a substantial load on the cruising range and offers huge savings potential, which we have systematically utilized in MEET. This is because customers are just as sensitive to the cruising range as they are to comfort in their environmentally friendly car.

In the past, the air flow was heated up and transferred to the interior in order to keep passengers warm or cool them down, and this was supplemented in places by optional seat and steering wheel heaters. Although this is conventional, it is uneconomical—in an electric vehicle. After all, these different heating methods have not been coordinated in either an energetic sense or in terms of passenger comfort.

The particularly efficient alternative is surface heating made up of heating elements in the form of thin, flexible films. It is only used on the areas that come into direct contact with the passengers, such as seats, side trim panels, and arm rests.

This direct contact quickly creates a pleasant temperature for passengers—largely independently of the cabin air temperature. The direct contact has another advantage: the two-zone air conditioning for driver and front-seat passenger is becoming even more precise as the air flows no longer mix.

MEET also offers air heating, but this is optimally coordinated with the surface heating and is therefore significantly more efficient. This is because it utilizes the waste heat from the drive system via the heat pump as well as thermal energy stored from the battery charging process. This results in lower heating energy requirements and greater comfort.

No time for instructions? No problem. In the MEET, the operating console has been redesigned from the ground up for optimal comfort. The interface can be understood quickly and easily, but still provides access to sophisticated functions.

Besides the menu navigation, one important factor when it comes to ease of use is the touch screen with acoustic and haptic feedback. To minimize distraction while driving, the concept also includes contact-free, gesture-based control.

Via the interface, the passengers can control navigation, music, and the air conditioning system, and access information, such as current driving data or the technical status of the powertrain and battery.

Provision has also been made for smartphone batteries, with an inductive charging station hidden in the instrument panel.
