The MAHLE Group, which earlier this year acquired Cosworth Technology from Audi, today announced that its new operations will be renamed MAHLE Powertrain as of July 1st.

MAHLE, which has 38,000 employees in 70 worldwide production plants and achieved sales of more than 3.7 billion euros (£ 2.45 billion) in 2004, is among the top 30 Tier 1 automotive suppliers globally. It is a leading manufacturer of engine components and filter systems.

Speaking at a London press conference today, Professor Dr. Heinz K. Junker, Chairman of the MAHLE Management Board, said: “MAHLE Powertrain gives us important new powertrain and engine engineering capabilities, creating for us a unique new business proposition in the long run – from engineering services to integrated powertrain and engine hardware. As a Tier 1 supplier we can expect our customers to demand more turnkey system solutions and the skills, expertise and manufacturing facilities in MAHLE Powertrain will be of critical importance to our response.“

“With the facilities available at Northampton, Wellingborough and Worcester in the UK, not to mention the Novi operation in the USA, MAHLE Powertrain ably augments the remainder of the MAHLE Group, giving us tremendous new potential in the future“., said Professor Junker.

MAHLE specialises in engine component design, development and manufacture, involving such core products as pistons and powertrain components, the cylinder head with complete valve train, and related products focusing on media guidance, media processing and filtration. MAHLE defines ‘media' in this context as air, oil and fuel. MAHLE offers a much more comprehensive product portfolio than any other engine component manufacturer.

The Cosworth name, which has a tremendous heritage particularly in motorsport (the Cosworth DFV V8 racing engine established world-wide success over several decades), did not form part of either the Audi or MAHLE acquisitions. This led to restrictions on its use and some confusion in the marketplace. Also, the operation's ownership by a vehicle maker made it nearly impossible for it to win contracts from competitors.

At a stroke the creation of MAHLE Powertrain solves these problems – the name is clear of any unhelpful connotations and the MAHLE global sales and engineering network has already established promising and exciting new customer contacts.

As part of the MAHLE Group, MAHLE Powertrain, which has 650 employees, will move into new areas of advanced engineering, such a new fuels, new combustion systems and new engine control systems and will develop its capabilities in modern light vehicle diesel technology.
